I loved the article you wrote for The Atlantic about book tours, and the point you make about people coming to see you about the previous book, not the one you’re out promoting. Another piece of the puzzle must be that you yourself are already thinking about the next book. What kind of challenge does that present for you?

“It doesn’t, because I think that what a lot of people don’t understand is that when you do a book event, it’s a performance. It’s really much more about acting than it is about writing. And I don’t mean it’s about being false, but you know what I’m thinking is, ‘I’m here and I want to put on a really good program.’ But I’m not learning about writing, I’m not thinking through my craft, I’m not developing ideas for new books or coming to terms with old books.”
